Course Content

Lecture:

"Electricity-1" treats d.c. networks and electrostatics

  • Ideal and real electrical elements, power and energy
  • Solving methods for d.c. networks
  • Forces between electrical charges
  • The elecrical field and its properties
  • Electrostatical energy storage in capacitors
  • The capacity of the capacitor and its behaviour during charge and discharge

Practical exercises:

In the practical exercise sessions students solve problems under supervision. The selected problems are a direct application of knowledge and concepts gained in the lectures.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes

  • BaLO_1 To possess in-depth, application-oriented knowledge, understanding and practical skills related to mathematics and science, directed towards engineering applications.
  • BaLO_2 To possess application-oriented knowledge, understanding and skills about engineering sciences and engineering techniques.
  • BaLO_3 To solve practical engineering problems from an understanding of the basic theory and from an understanding of basic methods for the schematisation and modelling of processes or systems.
  • BaLO_5 To effectively look up scientific and technical information, to evaluate and process such information and to refer to it correctly.
  • BaLO_6 Based on acquired insight, to select the appropriate methods of research, design and solution and appropriately apply the results in a scientific and effective manner.
  • BaLO_9 To demonstrate an engineering attitude: attention to planning, to technical, economic and societal factors as well as managerial implications, assessment of the risks and feasibility of the proposed approach or solution, being result-driven and achieving effective solutions, innovative thinking.
  • BaLO_10 To correctly handle the scientific and discipline-specific terminology in language relevant to the programme.
  • BaLO_13 To act in an ethical and socially responsible manner with attention to technical, economic, human and sustainability aspects.

Objectives

D1: understands the behavior of d.c. circuits and can solve circuits using different techniques (BaLO 1, 2 ,3)
D2: has insight in the interaction between electrical charges and electrical fields (BaLO 1, 2, 3)
D3: understands the dangers of electricity and the risks involved with mains voltage operations and measurements  (BaLO 13)
D4: interpretes measurements and reports in a correct manner (BaLO 5, 6, 9, 13)

AD1: reasons and acts in a structured and systematic manner (BaLO 9)
AD2: communicates in Dutch in a comprehensible and structured manner (BaLO 10)
AD3: develops a professional attitude  (BaLO 9, 10, 13)

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam moment 1st session:
Outside the exam period: test exam: written exam 25% or 0% (whether test exam pass or fail)
Lectures and exercises: written exam 75% or 100% (whether test exam pass or fail) (not transferred to 2nd session)

    Exam moment 2nd session:
Lectures and exercises: written exam 100%

Additional info regarding evaluation

During the 6th or 7th week of the academic year a test exam is held, covering a part of the syllabus (subject matter to be communicated via PointCarré). This test exam is analogous in style and level to the exam in January, and covers both theory and exercises. You pass the test exam when you achieve at least 10/20 in total. This test exam counts for 25% of the total points for electrity-1 if you pass, and in this case the subject matter covered in the test exam is omitted for the exam in January. If you don't pass the test exam, the points do not count, but then the subject matter is not omitted for the exam in January. In case of a second examination  (i.e. August - September) you need to study the complete syllabus, regardless of your result on the test exam.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
