Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes Master
1.       The students have an extensive and in depth knowledge and understanding of Belgian, international and European law.
2.       The students have specialised knowledge of one or more field of law, commensurate with the graduation option they have chosen: civil and procedural law, criminology, economic law, international and European law, fiscal law, public law, social law, criminal law.
3.       The students know and understand the relationship between Belgian, European and international law, and can analyse cross-border legal problems.
4.       The students know the principles upon which other legal systems and traditions are based, can analyse them and have an understanding of how legal systems and legal traditions influence each other. The students approach the law and legal questions from a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective.
5.       The students can think critically about law as an evolutionary social (whether or not universal) phenomenon; they are equipped to situate and understand new developments within their context, and know that they will have to constantly adjust their knowledge.
6.       The students can place their thorough knowledge within a broader context – political, economic, that of legal theory, historical, philosophical, ethical, psychological, sociological or cultural.
7.       The students can think and act independently and critically, they can study and work independently.
8.       The students understand how legal rules come into existence, which principles they are founded upon, which aims they are intended to meet; they know that these rules and principles, and the interpretation thereof, evolve and they can critically assess that evolution.
9.       The students can apply their advanced theoretical and practical knowledge to identify and contextualise problems, and provide a workable solution to those problems using the appropriate methodology (in particular the finding, critical analysis and interpretation of texts).
10.     The students can analyse problems which touch on different fields of law and can provide legally and socially responsible solutions to those problems.
11.     The students can apply the requisite elements of scientific legal research in their various phases:  research approach, formulation of research questions, development of research method, strategies for the locating, gathering and selection of sources, ability to define the relevance of the research in its broader legal and social context.
12.     The students have a solid grasp of the thought processes of classification, interpretation and assessment relevant to scientific research in their discipline, and are familiar with the principles of argumentation. They can independently and scientifically handle and explore a legal topic; they are in a position to analyse, synthesize and problem solve at the academic level.
13.     The students can communicate with lay people and colleagues, can clearly express their opinions, collaborate and enter into debates; they can make logical and correct legal arguments and defend their point of view.
14.     The students can consult sources in French, and can follow, understand and summarize pleadings in that language.
15.     The students can consult sources in English, and can follow, understand and summarize pleadings in that language.
16.     The students can critically reflect on the role and responsibility of a lawyer vis-à-vis the citizen and legal institutions; in this way they develop a critical approach grounded in the principles of Free Inquiry and the university's diversity policy.
17.     The students are familiar with the skills and techniques needed to draft clear and coherent legal documents, to suit their intended purpose, and can cast a critical eye there-over. They can provide the results of their research in a logical written report.
18.     The students have knowledge of existing instruments for legal protection,  law enforcement, and avoidance of conflict; they have an understanding of alternative dispute and conflict resolution.
