Course Content

After the general introduction, dealing with the nature and structure of social security law, the course will turn to a study of the numerous social security acts. In the final stage the students will be made familiar with the administrative and judicial procedures.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

Social security law is an obligatory course in the master of laws: 

  • By the end of this course, students know the meaning of the notion social security law and the techniques it uses to attend its goals.
  • The students know the social insurance and social assistance schemes and the personal scope thereof.
  • The students understand the goals the legislator wants to achieve by means of these schemes and comprehend which factors determine the amount of social security contributions and benefits.
  • The students have a good comprehension of the administrative procedure to obtain social security benefits and of the different manners according tot which the legislator ensures the enforcement of social security legislation and provides legal protection to social insured persons.
  • The students can place factual cases in the legal framework and solve cases on the basis of the applicable legislation.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Evaluation criteria:

  • knowledge and comprehension of basic concepts, social insurance schemes and their financing, social assistance schemes, administrative and judicial procedures
  • correct indication of applicable legislation and quality of the student's reasons on which the solution of cases is based.
