"Electrotechnics" covers aspects of electric networks and energy conversion:

Practical exercises en laboratory practicals:
In the practical exercise sessions students solve problems under supervision. The selected problems are a direct application of knowledge and concepts gained in the lectures.
The laboratory practicals support the theoretical course. The practicals should be prepared beforehand and are carried out independently by the student. 
 
Practicals involving mains electricity may only be performed when the student holds the BA4 certificate for the current academic year.

Practicals involving mains electricity may only be performed when the student holds the BA4 certificate for the current academic year.If during the preparation, the execution, or the making of the report of the practicum, the laboratory rules are not observed by the student, this can result in a zero mark for the practicum in question.

Objectives

General objectives of the course:

Providing basic training about electrotechnics (AC networks, three phase systems), electric appliances (magnetic circuits, transformers and rotating machines); low voltage installations, electricity distribution and applicatioh.

Acquiring a concise overview of the requirements for safe and reliable electrical low voltage installations and appliances: how several appliances and machines are integrated in an installation(transformers, motors, cables,...), focusing on the technical background of standards and regulations.

Students shall have the basic knowledge necessary to use electrical appliances and installations as a non specialised engineer, knowing enough of the underlying principles and theoretical asects to solve practical electrotechnical problelms such as installing a device, designing a coil, compensating power factor.

Students shall know the constituent part of an electrical installation conforming to the safety requirements.
 

Specific objectives:

D1: understands the operation of the transformers and has insight in their characteristics and use (BaLO 1, 2)

D2: has insight in the energetic efficiency of transformers and is able to analyse it (BaLO 1, 2, 9)

D3: has insight in three phase circuits and three phase transformers (BaLO 1, 2, 9)

D4: has insight in the issues of grid pollution and power quality, including underlying standardization (BaLO 2, 9)

D5: operates and measures electrical circuits and transformers in a safe way (BaLO 2, 9)

D6: interpretes the measurements and reports correctly (BaLO 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13)

 

AD1: reasons and acts in a structured and systematic manner (BaLO 9)

AD2: communicates in Dutch in a comprehensible and structured manner (BaLO 10, 11)

AD3: develops a professional attitude  (BaLO 9, 10, 13)

 

 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam moment 1st session:
    Lecture and exercises: written exam: 75% (not transferred to 2nd session)
    Practicals: reports: 25% (immediately transferred to 2nd session)
    Exam moment 2nd session:
    Lecture and exercises: written exam: 75%
    Practicals: reports: 25% (immediately transferred from 1st session)

    Not observing the laboratory regulations during the preparation, execution and/or reporting of the practicum may result in a zero for the considered practicum.

Additional info regarding evaluation

An illegitimate absence of more than 25 % at the laboratory practicals leads to an absent quotation for the laboratory practicals. The sanctions taken in the first exam session are transferred to the second exam session.
