- Inhoud
This Biochemistry course provides an introduction to the molecular design of life. First, we describe the molecular structure of nucleic acids, proteins and explain replication, transcription and translation and describe biological membranes.
In a second part, we focus on the structure-function relation of proteins: Enzymatic activity, Cooperativity, enzyme regulation and protein folding.
The last part of the course describes the basic principles of metabolism with focus on the key catabolic pathways.

General competencies
The students should be able to:
- Draw the covalent structure of the key biomolecules and metabolites
- Describe the molecular forces that define the structure and the interactions between biomolecules and drive metabolism
- Understand the flow of information (replication, transcription and translation)
- Describe the structure-function relations of biological macromolecules (DNA, proteins,...) by using real examples.
- Describe the most important anabolic and catabolic pathways and integrate them in a broader metabolic network.
