Course Content

Content of the theoretical lectures

The course starts with an introduction of probability theory and descriptive statistics (types of variables, parameters, distributions). In a second part, the basics of statistical inference is explained by means of confidence interval and an introduction to statistical hypothesis testing, for both discrete as well as continuous data.

A third part of the course covers the basics of linear models (Analysis of Variance and Regression Analysis).

All methods are clearly illustrated by examples from the medical and Manual Therapeutic domain.

In a last part of the course the main focus lies on the interpretation and critical appraisal of data and results from domain specific literature, in preparation for the master thesis.

Content of the practical exercises

In addition to the theoretical lectures, both manual exercises as well as exercises using a statistical computer software (SPSS) are  presented during the practical exercise sessions. Also here the emphasis lies on the interpretation and critical analysis of the results.

Learning Outcomes

General Competences

*Theoretical lectures:

Acquiring knowledge with regard to introductory concepts of both descriptive and inductive statistics. The emphasis lies on the interpretation of results and the choice of the correct statistical techniques.

*Practical exercises:

The students must be capable of individually solving exercises concerning the theory (both manually and using statistical software).

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 40% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Practical Exam with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:

Written Exam bepaalt 60% van het eindcijfer

PRAC Practical Assignment bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Within the category Written Exam the following assignments need to be completed:

Written open book exam (weight 1) 60% of the final score.

Explanation: The knowledge of the theoretical and practical concepts will be evaluated in a written open book exam. The exam consists of both multiple choice questions (focus on exercises, also concerning the interpretation of SPSS output) combined with some open questions.

Within the category PRAC Practical Assignment the following assignments need to be completed:

Report of a statistical analysis using SPSS (weight 1), 40% of the final score.

Explanation: The report of the SPSS analysis must be handed in on the day of the written exam, on paper.
