Offer 1 with catalog number 1021051ANR for all students in the 2nd semester at a (A) Bachelor - preliminary level.
This course constitutes the final building block of your English-Dutch translation trajectory in the Bachelor programme. In these practical seminars, we will continue to focus on translation as a goal-oriented activity, since we always translate " for someone, with a certain goal" (Vanderbauwhede & Henn, 2019, p.330). A successful translation mediates the linguistic and cultural distance between source audience/source context on the one hand and target audience/target on the other, and this process can in turn be informed by the desired communicative goal. In addition to translating texts - in both directions of translation - there will also be time for text adaptation, where the genre, context, target audience and/or communicative purpose of the target text may differ from that of the source text.
We will mostly focus on the translation of cultural texts, meaning that some of the institutional, historical, and cultural knowledge you have gained in English V: Language and Culture can be practically applied in translation assignments. You will also be able to sample three domains in translation that are covered in the master's in translation, namely literary, technical-scientific and economic translation.
Course materials (digital) will be shared via the learning platform in the course of the semester. You will have to carry out translation, adaptation, revision and/or post-editing assignments at home or during class, alone or in pairs/groups. On a selection of these assignments you will receive feedback and an evaluation.
Upon successful completion of the course, students can
