Course Content
The student chooses a subject according to his or her option and interests.

  • The student is assigned an engineering problem that should be solved within one of the research teams
  • The focus is on the practical realization on a scientific basis:
    • Solve a typical engineering problem, assuming that the assignment is issued by a non-technical manager who only wants a solution for the problem or product.
    • Every student delivers a clear own contribution (in a team of two students)
    • The professors and assistants should be viewed as consultants
  • Project follow up
    • Log book (individually)
    • Progress reports (common)
    • Midterm evaluation by the supervisor(s)
  • Project report (7,000 - 10,000 words)
  • Presentation (individually or with the group)
Course material
Handbook (Recommended) : How to Write a Thesis, H. Teitelbaum, BIB, 9780671885274, 1989

Learning Outcomes

Objectives

D1: can independantly work out a scientific and technical assignment (BaLO 1, 2, 3, 6, 8)
D2: arrives at a technical realisation or implementation that works (BaLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9)
D3: situates the work within a scientific and technical context (BaLO 5, 8, 9, 10, 11)
D4: has insight in the subject and the broader framework (BaLO 6, 8, 10)
D5: publishes the results in a scientific report according to research standards (BaLO 5, 8, 10, 11)
D6: presenteert en verdedigt de resultaten mondeling (BaLO 10, 11)
D7: realises the above objectives within the specialisation (BaSLO 14 ELO)

AD1: reasons and acts in a structured and systematic manner (BaLO 9)
AD2: communicates in Dutch in a comprehensible and structured manner (BaLO 10, 11)
AD3: develops a professional attitude (BaLO 9, 10, 13)

Learning outcomes

  • BaLO_1 To possess in-depth, application-oriented knowledge, understanding and practical skills related to mathematics and science, directed towards engineering applications.
  • BaLO_2 To possess application-oriented knowledge, understanding and skills about engineering sciences and engineering techniques.
  • BaLO_3 To solve practical engineering problems from an understanding of the basic theory and from an understanding of basic methods for the schematisation and modelling of processes or systems.
  • BaLO_4 Implementation-oriented and analytical problem-solving, design, development and creative innovation with a focus on the operational implications of the specific case.
  • BaLO_5 To effectively look up scientific and technical information, to evaluate and process such information and to refer to it correctly.
  • BaLO_6 Based on acquired insight, to select the appropriate methods of research, design and solution and appropriately apply the results in a scientific and effective manner.
  • BaLO_7 To formulate a problem within a clearly defined framework and to independently plan and develop an engineering project, with attention to the boundary conditions affecting its technical realization.
  • BaLO_8 To demonstrate a research attitude: accuracy, critical reflection, scientific and technical curiosity, justification of choices.
  • BaLO_9 To demonstrate an engineering attitude: attention to planning, to technical, economic and societal factors as well as managerial implications, assessment of the risks and feasibility of the proposed approach or solution, being result-driven and achieving effective solutions, innovative thinking.
  • BaLO_10 To correctly handle the scientific and discipline-specific terminology in language relevant to the programme.
  • BaLO_11 To present and communicate the results of technical and scientific work, in writing, orally and visually.
  • BaLO_13 To act in an ethical and socially responsible manner with attention to technical, economic, human and sustainability aspects.
  • BaSLO_14-ELO To possess application-oriented knowledge, understanding and skills in the broad field of engineering sciences and engineering techniques for electronics and ICT engineering.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
    - realisation of the assignment: 60% (not transferred to 2nd session)
    - report: 20% (not transferred to 2nd session)
    - presentation: 20% (not transferred to 2nd session)
    Exam time 2nd session:
    - realisation of the assignment: 60%
    - report: 20%
    - presentation: 20%

If a score less than 10 / 20 is obtained for the part realisation of the assignment, then this score becomes the maximum achievable final mark for the course.
