Course Content

This course provides a comprehensive overview on the functioning, mechanisms and procedures of the EU institutions, which will allow the students to:

  1. distinguish between the functions of multiple EU Institutions;
  2. be updated on the recent and current policy trends developed or responded to by the EU Institutions;
  3. broaden understanding on the involvement of the EU Member States in functioning of the EU Institutions;
  4. develop skills in working with the EU institutional documents and websites.

The reading material includes: book chapters, articles, infographics and official documents.

The course consists of the six following modules:

  • Module 1. EU institutions: Introduction
  • Module 2. European Parliament
  • Module 3. Avoiding confusion: European Council and the Council of the European Union
  • Module 4. EU policy-making forge: European Commission
  • Module 5. EU Judicial bodies: Court of Justice of the EU and European Court of Auditors
  • Module 6. European Central Bank 

The duration of the course is 12 weeks.

Algemene competenties

After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Identify the core European institutions and their functions;
  • Be able to place their respective roles in the decision-making processes.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 60% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Each of the six module consists of reading material and an exercise, which will be evaluated by the course coordinator. After successfully accomplishing an assignment, a student receives maximum 10 points (a maximum of 60 points). The students are given 2 weeks to finalise each module. Upon the end of the six modules, the students take a final exam. The final exam is 40 points. The total is therefore 100 points  (or 100%).
