Inhoud

-

Electrical networks (DC and AC) including linearity, Thévenin and Norton schematics, Bode diagrams and Cole-Cole plots with specific biomedical applications: cells, tissues, organs.
- Feedback and its effects on the behaviour of electronic circuits

- Operational amplifiers and circuits with specific focus on biomedical instrumentation.

- Intracellular measurement techniques

- Bio-impedance sensors: comparison of various techniques: bridge methods, 2- versus 4 points measurements, balanced and auto-balancing techniques

- Electrical properties of varous components and tissues of the human body

- Analog-to-Digital converter circuits

- Interference mechanisms and their countermeasurs

Practical exercises aim to make the student familiar with the calculus of basic electronic circuits with focus on biomedical circuits applications, comprising resistances, capacitors, operational amplifiers, but also biomedical matter. Consequently practical measurement labs will be organized to get familiar with the practical measurement aspects.
The last part of the practical work consists of a project work: a practical contribution to the realization of a biomedical measurement system, with special emphasis on the safety aspects (e.g. galvanic shielding via opto-electronic coupling). After having tested this biomedical measurement system, the students will measure biomedical signals (ECG) on the human body and the results will be critically analyzed. A report will be prepared in team and a oral evaluation will take place on an individual basis.

Leerresultaten

Algemene competenties

Acquire basic knowledge about electronic devices, sensors and measurement systems applied in the biomedical domain. Acquire insights on passive and active electrical properties of the human body: cells, tissue, organs. The acquired knowledge must allow the student to pick up the evolutions in the domain of biomedical sensors and instrumentation and apply them in practical situations.

This course contributes to the following programme outcomes of the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering:

MA_A:  KNOWLEDGE ORIENTED COMPETENCES

4. reformulate complex engineering problems in order to solve them (simplifying assumptions, reducing complexity)
6. correctly report on research or design results in the form of a technical report or in the form of a scientific paper
8. collaborate in a (multidisciplinary) team

MA_B: ATTITUDE

12. a creative, problem-solving, result-driven and evidence-based attitude, aiming at innovation and applicability in industry and society
13. a critical attitude towards one’s own results and those of others
14. consciousness of the ethical, social, environmental and economic context of his/her work and strives for sustainable solutions to engineering problems including safety and quality assurance aspects

MA_C: SPECIFIC BIOMEDICAL KNOWLEDGE

18. To apply acquired knowledge and skills for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of biomedical products, systems and techniques  in the health care sector.

Beoordelingsinformatie

Toelichting: Oral examation (3/4) with closed book but a written preparation.

Binnen de categorie WPO Praktijkopdracht dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

  • Project Eval met een wegingsfactor 100 en aldus 25% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Permanent evaluation (1/4) of the practical work.

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie

Oral examination: Students get a few questions about the content of the course with a very small moment to consult the course material. After this small inspection moment, the student prepare their answers in a closed book framework. Finally oral discussion with the examinator.

The report of the WPO assignment will be prepared in group and evaluated as a group work. Afterwards an oral discussion about the written report will take place on an individual base. Course and report material may be consulted.
