Course Content
The first part in the course deals with the practical aspects of the different fabrication of opto-electronic devices. Aspects of interest are: good practises in a micro-electrnics lab, lithography, etching techniques, metallization processes, plasma processes, oxidation, back end processes such as grinding, CMP,..., bonding techniques.



In the second part of the course the student will design its own mask set for the fabrication and characterization of an optoelectronic device. Afterwards he/she will contribute to the fabrication of this device and will evaluate the opto-electronic characteristics of it.

The course will be spread over two semesters. Part one takes place in the first semester and part two in the second semester (almost equally spread).

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

The student gets practical experience in and familiar with the microelectronic and optoelectronic fabrication processes of devices. He will be able to design masks taking into account the general design rules. The student also gets familiar with optical and electrical test equipment to measure the characteristics of the fabricated devices.



The student also get familiar with reporting in the lab world from micro-opto-electronics and he will get experience with the various safety aspects in a clean room.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Teamwork determines 15% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 15% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 35% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 35% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • WPO Written group report with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • WPO Oral Discussion with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • ZELF Oral Discussion with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • ZELF Written Report with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

During the first part of the course, the student will make a lab report of good practise of each lab session such that these notes can be used for back-up for a more extended report. Only after all lab session of part 1 are finished, the assistent will announce the topics for an extended lab report. This lab report will be discusses in an oral session with assistens and lecturers.

During the second part of the course, the student will make a overal written report of the device he designed, fabricated and measured. Critical assessment of the work done is very important. This written report will be orally evaluated at the end of the year.
