Learning Outcomes

General competences

This course is about how to extract information from data and how informative data are generated. A selection of practical statistical and mathematical methods are applied to the kinds of problems encountered when studying environmental data. More specifically we want the students to develop a critical appreciation for the tasks of:

  • Selecting / designing optimal experimental procedures
  • Understanding, assessing and interpreting research results
  • Promoting critical judgments in data analysis, model and method development
  • Solving analytical problems in a quantitative manner with the aid of the spreadsheet EXCEL

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Theory + Exercise with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: 4 questions

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written open-book examination containing resolution of exercises and open theoretical questions. The exam takes place over a period of 3 hrs and requires the use of a computer. A written report summarizing the results/answers and the methodology is requested at the end of the examination.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
