Course Content

The course consists of a number of assignments. For each task there are one or more introductory lectures followed by an experiment. The experiments mainly consist of the analysis of data from particle physics and astro-particle physics experiments.
At the end of the lectures a more extended introduction to astro-particle physics is given.

Course material
Course text (Required) : Experimentele studie van de micro- en macrokosmos, De studenten krijgen een copie van de slides van de lessen.
Additional info

The slides of the lectures are available at http://sites.google.com/site/nickveweb.

Obligatory : Presence at the lectures + Solving of exercises + Participation in presentations and practical work.
An account on the IIHE computers will be provided in view of the practical work
concerning simulation and data analysis activities.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

This course comprises an extension of the applications of the particle physics aspects which were introduced in the course "Subatomic Physics I".
The emphasis of this course is on the analysis and interpretation of experimental data in the field of astro-particle physics.
The competences acquired are:

- obtaining insight in the application of particle physics concepts in a broader sense and making links with experimental observations
- acquire the measurement and computing techniques needed for the experiments
- formulate ideas clearly, both orally and in written reports
- acquire communication skills

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Note: The student has to attend all sessions.
Het examen bestaat uit de evaluatie van de opdrachten. Er is geen mogelijkheid tot her-examen in 2de zittijd.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Evaluation will be performed on basis of handed-in solutions of exercises + performance during presentations and practical work. Concerning the evaluation process special emphasis is given to the understanding of the underlying (astro)physical principles outlined during the lectures, application of these in practical situations and correct description c.q. communication of the methods which were followed in the analysis and solution of the various scientific cases.

There is no intermediate examination or re-examination possibility.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
