Studenten die dit opleidingsonderdeel opnemen, moeten geslaagd zijn voor ‘Arbeids- en organisatiepsychologie’. Students who want to enroll for this course, must have passed ‘Principles of Human Resource Management' Studenten in de Master Lichamelijke Opvoeding en bewegingswetenschappen, afstudeerrichting sportmanagement, moeten minstens ingeschreven of geslaagd zijn voor ‘Management en strategie’ en voor ‘Inleiding tot boekhouden’ en voor ‘Inleiding tot IT and Operations Management’. Voor de studenten in de Master Psychologie, afstudeerrichting arbeid en organisatiepsychologie en voor de studenten master Sociologie, gelden geen bijkomende inschrijvingsvereisten.

Course Content

This course is an advanced course in the field of management and strategy, focusing on organizational design and change. The course is organized around three main themes: (1) introduction to key concepts of organization design, (2) components of the STAR model; and (3) organizational change. The following topics will be covered:  

  • Chapter 1: Defining organization design and outlining its history
  • Chapter 2: Key concepts, including the STAR model
  • Chapter 3: Strategy, design and organizational effectiveness
  • Chapter 4: Organizational structures
  • Chapter 5: Lateral capability
  • Chapter 6: People issues of the design
  • Chapter 7: Reward and recognition programs
  • Chapter 8: Organizational change, leadership and culture
  • Chapter 9: Agility
  • Chapter 10: Future challenges

The course typically consists of lectures (theory), interactive case discussions, and site visits (practice).

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

At the end of the course, students should be able to: 
  • assess the appropriateness of an organizational structure;
  • make recommendations about the design and adaptation of organizational structures based on the external and internal context of the organization;
  • make recommendations on the design and implementation of elements of human resource management;
  • make recommendations about the set-up and implementation of change management processes.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

  • Group Presentation with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

1st session

  • Oral exam (80% of total grade): The exam is an oral exam, with written preparation. During the preparation time students are permitted to use the textbook, notes, lecture slides, and their own supplementary sources. E-books/readers and other electronic devices are not allowed. Students are requested to apply concepts and theories from the course to one or more cases. The case materials are provided by the lecturer(s) and may consist of recent newspaper articles, websites, company information, blogs, etc.
  • Group presentation (20% of total grade): Students present to each other the result of their group assignment they worked on during the semester.

2nd session

  • Oral exam (100% of total grade): The exam is an oral exam, with written preparation. During the preparation time students are permitted to use the textbook, notes, lecture slides, and their own supplementary sources. E-books/readers and other electronic devices are not allowed. Students are requested to apply concepts and theories from the course to one or more cases.
