Course Content

The general theme of this course is the advanced study of issues in analytical philosophy. A broad range of specific discussion topics is proposed, from which a careful selection shall be made in agreement with the students. These include subjects from the philosophy of science and philosophical logic such as: the nature of space and time, Gödel's incompleteness results, computability theory, non-classical logic, semantic paradoxes, mathematical epistemology, etc.

Algemene competenties

The student is well acquainted with and capable of discussing / explaining some advanced topcis in analytical philosophy. The student is moreover able to properly argue for and present a personal view on said topics, both in writing and orally.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: The exam is open book and starts from an essay prepared by the student (see essay questions and planning in the syllabus); the assessment is based on the essay itself and on the way in which the student defends his/het position in the essay.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Participation with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: the students are expected to come to each seminar prepared (preparation of reading as determined in the syllabus

Additional info regarding evaluation

Assessment will be based both on an examination and participation during classes. Regular attendance at the course seminars will thus be expected, as well as a proper preparation of discussion topics. The final exam is an "open book" one, having as its point of departure an informal essay
prepared by each student in the course of the semester, and feedback received on that by the lecturers.
