Inhoud

The Capita Selecta Multimedia (CSM) seminars series is based on interactive sessions where students discuss with the teacher and/or an invited expert. Students study scientific papers on topics of their choice, after approval by the teacher.

The selected themes are based on the interests of the participating students.

A non-exclusive list of potential themes encompasses: sound, image and video processing, sound and image synthesis, text and image analysis, high-dynamic range and immersive imaging, error-resilient coding, compression, the human visual system and perceptual metrics, human-machine interaction, 3D graphics and rendering, sociological aspects of new media, multimedia security, …

Students will present and animate group discussions. They will be asked to provide their synthesis with a preliminary 3-minutes pitch, then an extended 20-minutes presentation. Typically, two topics per student are covered. Towards the end of the seminar, each student will redact a short report on his/her favorite topic. Posters for pitches, slides for presentations and reports will be shared among all participants on the Canvas web platform.

Leerresultaten

Algemene competenties

Students will be exposed to various recent topics in multimedia and will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of advanced methods and theories to schematize and model complex problems or processes.

Students will gain experience in presenting and explaining complex computational methods to a general audience. The format of the seminar adheres to professional work environment where communications through limited time presentations is usual in group meetings.

Students will develop thinking out of the box and evaluate projects, systems and processes, particularly when based on incomplete, contradictory and/or redundant information. He/she will adopt a critical, but constructive, attitude towards one’s own results and those of others.

The students must develop:

  • a critical attitude towards one’s own results and those of others.
  • the flexibility and adaptability to work in an international and/or intercultural context.
  • an attitude of life-long learning, essential for the future development of his/her career.
  • a profound knowledge of either information and communication technology systems.
  • a broad overview of the role of electronics and informatics in industry and business.
  • awareness of the impact of information and communication technologies on society.

Beoordelingsinformatie

Toelichting: The student is evaluated based on the participation to the discussions during the contact hours and the delivered presentations. If requested by the student an oral examination is organised to correct the scores obtained during the contact hours. During the oral examination the student is evaluated based on the insights the student is able to demonstrate on the items addressed during the contact hours. The student is allowed to use the course material and notes during the oral examination.

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie

The evaluation is based on the quality of interactions, pitches, presentations and the report with a relative weight of 20%, 10%, 40%, and 30% of the final mark, respectively.

If requested by the student an oral examination is organized in second session where a presentation on an approved topic of his choice is delivered at the research team. An improved version of his/her report may be resubmitted as well.
