Course Content

Diplomatics (or the study of charters) is a traditional auxiliary science of history. It is the study of the relationship between form, content and function of charters in the context of pragmatic literacy, as well as the oral and ritual communication that plays a role in their issue, use and destruction. This course deals with the definition, typology, formal characteristics, production and transmission of charters.
This course also explains the basic principles of chronology (including different eras, the beginning of the year and the conversion of dates) and sigillography.
