Course Content
  1. Getting acquainted with contemporary cultural research
  2. Adopting a critical scope on contemporary cultural research in terms of its social, scientific and theoretical relevance
  3. Learning to evaluate the empirical quality of contemporary cultural research
  4. Translating the findings of cultural research into recommendations
  5. Strong emphasis lies on oral presentation of scientific findings and revelations

Each year a number of topics are discussed. The selected topics invite discussion about theory development, empirical research and the relevance of sociological research to societal debates and policy.

In the past, following themes were discussed: The meaning of post-tradition, individualization versus the symbolic society; structuration and destructuration of taste, Rationalist and symbolic  approaches of feelings of insecurity, cultural explanations of ethnocentrism.

General competencies

After the course, students should be able to:

  • situate the themes in the context of cultural and sociological theories and research traditions
  • discuss and evaluate research in a critical way
  • situate research results within the societal debates
  • translate the research findings into policy formulations


 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 70% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

    Note: In second examination period the evaluation is a 100% written exam

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Participation Seminar with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

  • Performance Disputant with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

  • Presentation Presenter with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

First examination period: evaluation based on participation in seminar, assignments, written test and oral presentations.
Second examination period: 100% written test.
