Course Content

The course introduces students to the key theoretical debates in urban studies, focusing in particular on the spatial/geographical dimensions of cities and urbanization. It adopts a theoretically pluralist approach towards urban studies. The course offers urban systems perspectives, debates political economy perspectives such as world-city formation, discusses urban diversity and segregation, focuses on transport and mobility issues, and explores the intersections of culture and urban development.

A sophisticated level of understanding of theories of urban geography

An in-depth knowledge of the historical and contemporary social, cultural, and economic changes affecting cities.

The ability to critically analyze city case studies using complex theoretical tools.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
LEC Presentation determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Critical summary & discussion with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written examination and permanent evaluation of one assignment. Partial marks for this assignment, if the student obtains at least half of the score, are transferred to the second session and to the next academic year. Students may not relinquish partial marks.
