Course Content

Introduction to the modulation and coding schemes / detection and estimation of signals.

Multiplexing and Carrier techniques.

  • Time Division Multiplexing (TDMA)
  • Multi-carrier Communications: OFDM and MIMO systems (FDMA)
  • Spread Spectrum Communications.(CDMA)

Physical layer / hardware realizations for

  • (broadband) wireless communications, including the channel (=propagation) modelling for wireless communication systems.
  • wired communications systems: elements of Digital Subscriber Loops (xDSL)
  • optical communication systems

All properties will be demonstrated using wireless standards (WiFi, DAB, Wireless Local Area Networks, WiMAX, Wireless Mesh Networks, LoRa Sensor and Ad Hoc Networks) and wired standard (ADSL, VDSL, ...)

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

Complementary course to the fundamental course of signal theory. Advanced study of radio communications and analog and digital modulation techniques. Description of practical designs (discrete hardware as well as ICs). Continued study of electrical transmission media and their practical applications: symmetric and asymmetric electrical transmission lines, bundles of pairs and electrical busses. Application of xDSL over POTS local loop, Telenet and teledistribution.


The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.
