5 ECTS credits
130 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1001034CNR for all students in the 2nd semester at a (C) Bachelor - specialised level.
THEORY:
In the lectures (HOCs), we will discuss in details (the application of) different non-invasive measurement techniques for determining physical structural characteristics of humans (e.g. dimensions, proportions, body composition, …), linked to topics such as general health, growth and (biological) development, physical fitness and performance. The principles discussed in this course are clarified using specific examples from research and practice.
PRACTICE:
The aim of the seminars and practical exercises (WPOs) is to teach students how to efficiently use various biometric measurements and testing methods as well as to critically interpret associated results. Based on the statistical processing of data collected in the student population(s) during the WPOs, students will also be asked to elaborate a specific research question within the domain of human biometrics applied to physical education and sport / movement sciences.
Presence in the lectures (HOCs) is not a requirement to be admitted to the exam. For all practical sessions (WPOs), including the presentations of the seminar assignments, 100% attendance is MANDATORY. In the event of a possible absence, the student has to notify the assistant of the course by e-mail at the latest within the week after the respective WPO. The student must then attend a catch-up session, which is organized by personal appointment during the regular teaching weeks and thus before the start of the 1st term exam period. In case of a legitimate absence, the student must submit evidence thereof to the faculty secretariat.
- The student has knowledge and insight into different aspects of human biometrics, with a special application in the field of physical education and sport / movement sciences.
- The student is able to describe and use different testing methods in human biometrics and to critically interpret results of these measurements.
- The student is able to apply various biometric measurements and testing methods within different domains (e.g. in the context of general health, growth and (biological) development, physical fitness and performance.
- The student is able to elaborate a specific research question about a certain topic in the domain of human biometrics applied to the field of physical education and sport / movement sciences, to search for and critically evaluate scientific papers about this topic and to report results of this analysis both in writing and orally, linked to communication, information- and ICT-literacy.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
The evaluation of THEORY comprises 1 examination part: “Written Exam”. Both knowledge and insight into the course material from the lectures (HOCs) are required. There is no possibility of a further oral examination.
The evaluation of PRACTICE, linked to the WPOs in which work is done in fixed teams of 2 to 3 students, consists of 2 examination parts:
(1) "Practical Exam": Evaluation of the final WORKPIECE per individual student, which bundles all individual reports with test results per practical session as well as a critical synthesis/conclusion.
(2) "Oral Exam": Evaluation of the SEMINAR ASSIGNMENT, linked to the elaboration of the specific research question, to be submitted in writing per team of students and also orally presented to the fellow students using PowerPoint. By asking in-depth questions about the presentation, the students’ knowledge is further tested in oral from. The subscores for this examination part can thus be different for the different team members. This oral examination takes place in the last week(s) of regular classes, so preceding the official (1st term) exam period.
[ATTENTION:] Absence from a mandatory part of the evaluation leads to an ‘absent’ as a result code. Not respecting pre-communicated deadlines also leads to an ‘absent’ as a result code for the respective exam period.
[ATTENTION:] A student who is absent from one or more mandatory WPOs, who does not report this in time (= at the latest within the week after the respective practical session) and/or who fails to attend the scheduled catch-up session (= organized by personal appointment during the regular teaching weeks), is not allowed to participate in the 1st and 2nd term exam period and will receive 0/20 as a result code in both exam periods.
[ATTENTION:] A student, who is (at all times) legitimately absent from one or more mandatory WPOs, who always reports this in time (= at the latest within the week after the respective practical session), and who also attends the scheduled catch-up session (= organized by personal appointment during the regular teaching weeks), will be awarded his/her corresponding subscore (for the Practical Exam / for the Oral Exam) in the 1st term exam period. Being unlawfully absent from one or more mandatory WPOs will in any case lead to an ‘absent’ as corresponding subscore (for the Practical Exam / for the Oral Exam) and thus also as result code for the 1st term exam period. In case of timely reporting (= at the latest within the week after the respective practical session) and attending the scheduled catch-up session (= organized by personal appointment during the regular teaching weeks), the corresponding subscore (for the Practical Exam / for the Oral Exam) of the student with (one or more) unlawful absences will only be awarded in the 2nd term exam period.
[ATTENTION:] To pass this course, a minimum of 10/20 for each examination part (N=3) is required! In case of an insufficient mark on one or more examination parts, the lowest subscore will be used as the final score instead of the weighted average. The partial result of an examination part, with at least a subscore of 10/20, will be automatically transferred to the 2nd term exam period. If the course needs to be retaken, the partial result of an examination part, with at least a subscore of 10/20, will also be automatically transferred to the following academic year. A student cannot refrain from this automatic transfer(s) of the partial result.
