Course Content

This course considers the entire (survey) research process. Special attention is given to different types of survey research (i.e., traditional survey research, diary research, and experience sampling research), the development of surveys, and the validation thereof. Moreover, the practice of survey research is also covered.

Further, technicalities of data collection, coding, data-analysis and reporting are dealt with. Special attention goes to setting up Web surveys. Where relevant ethical issues are discussed.

In the practical part of this course students work on the research plan of their master's thesis. Depending on the specific topic, students might work on: the formulation of the research questions, the development of an appropriate research design, sampling methods, questionnaire design (planning, questioning, layout, response types), response effects, data collection in the context of a possible pilot study, and the data analysis of this pilot study. The students report on this both in writing and orally.
