Course Content

There is an internship in the lab of the research group Human Physiology and Sports Physiotherapy (MFYS) with the following applications:

- administering exercise tests on different ergometers

- interpretation of ergospirometry data

- interpretation of heart rate-lactate curves

- drawing up a training schedule based on the heart rate lactate curves

In addition to the internship in the MFYS lab, the student will also have to do an internship outside this lab. This can be done in other test and research laboratories, but also in elite sport schools (Topsportscholen) or recognized training centers.

Taking and interpreting field tests to determine sport-specific (basic) properties is encouraged. The student must therefore be able to implement these results in the training schedules of the athletes.

The student also has the opportunity to participate in (international) scientific studies of the MFYS research group or other research institutions. The subject of the current research project, in which the student participates in this subject, must be different from the subject that is being investigated in the context of the master's thesis.

The student is encouraged to attend at least 1 (inter)national doctoral defense and / or congresses, symposia, workshop in the field of exercise physiology and training theory.

Internships abroad are also possible.

Every internship (in lab, research project or congresses) outside the MFYS lab must first be requested from the lecturer.

The emphasis is on developing the necessary scientific research competences in the field of exercise physiology and training theory.

Additional info

The exact content and the range of tasks are of course strongly bound to the internships chosen by the student and the sports branch, but the same requirements apply to each student regarding reporting (with a focus on personal progress) and feedback conversations (N = 2 or more).

Learning Outcomes

Learing Outcomes

During this internship, the student will develop the application of the acquired scientific knowledge related to exercise physiology and training theory into acquired skills.

  • After completing the internships, the student is able to conduct an exercise test with athletes, perform the necessary interpretation of the test results, and draw up a training schedule and provide training advice.
  • The student is able to reflect in a scientifically critical manner on the measuring devices used and to list the advantages and disadvantages and to exchange ideas with specialists and people who have no academic background.
  • The student can make the link between the results of lab tests and field tests and knows the advantages and disadvantages of both measuring methods.
  • The student is able to look up, analyze and report scientific specialist literature in the field of exercise physiology and training theory.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
SELF Internship determines 40% of the final mark.
Other determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Bespreking stageverslag with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: tijdens het mondeling examen wordt het stageverslag overlopen en dieper ingegaan op verschillende aspecten van het verslag.

Within the SELF Internship category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Stagebeoordelingen with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Note: Proces evaluatie op basis van de stagebeoordelingen van de stagebegeleiders

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Feedbackgesprekken with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Note: Proces evaluatie op basis van minstens 2 periodieke en persoonlijke feedbackgesprekken over inhoudelijke en praktische aspecten van de onderzoeksstage en het doorgemaakte leerproces

Additional info regarding evaluation

The assessment consists of the following assignment categories:

  • Product: oral exam with a weighting factor of 5 and thus 50% of the total final mark.
  • Explanation: during the oral exam, the internship report is reviewed and the various aspects of the report are discussed in more detail.

  • Product: internships with a weighting factor of 4 and thus 40% of the total final mark.
  • Explanation: Process evaluation based on the internship assessments of the internship supervisors.

  • Product: feedback interviews with a weighting factor of 1 and thus 10% of the total final mark.
  • Explanation: Process evaluation based on at least 2 periodic and personal feedback conversations about substantive and practical aspects of the research internship and the learning process experienced.

Additional info with regard toevaluation

If there are unsatisfactory marks on certain parts (a mark lower than 8/20), the weighted average is deviated from and the lowest partial result counts as the exam result. If the student scored 10/20 for a component, but does not pass the course, this grade (≥10/20) is automatically transferred to the second examination period. No partial grades are transferred to the next academic year.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.

Academic context

This course offer isn't part of a fixed set of graduation requirements. Hence, it is a free elective.
