Enrolling for this plan is also possible having completed the Preparatory Programme Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering.
The multidisciplinary programme Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering enhances the scientific background and bridges the gap between medical knowledge and technology. The global programme is worth 120 ECTS. Students can choose between 5 different specialisations ('profiles').
- Radiation Physics
- Biomechanics and Biomaterials
- Sensors and Medical Devices
- Neuro-engineering
- Generic programme
The 1st year of the master programme (= the 'starting plan') is worth 60 ECTS and consists of:
- 46 ECTS of common compulsory courses
- a compulsory computational course (6 ECTS) (to select 1 out of 3)
- 8 ECTS of elective courses from clusters
The 2nd year of the master programme is worth 60 ECTS and consists of:
- 14 ECTS of common compulsory courses
- 22 ECTS of elective courses from clusters
- a master's thesis (24 ECTS)
In the 2nd year students have to suscribe to 1 of the 5 'profiles' (by a 'plan change')
The 'Biomechanics and Biomaterials' profile aims at students interested in specializing in these aspects of Biomedical Engineering.
Students who have choosen the profile 'Biomechanics and Biomaterials' must:
1) successfully complete at least 18 ECTS of electives from the cluster 'Biomechanics and Biomaterials', different from the Computational Course selected as compulsory course! The remaining electives can be chosen from the same and/or from the other clusters or general electives.
2) conduct a master's thesis in the field of Biomechanics and Biomaterials.
This module includes 66 ECTS of compulsory courses: 60 ECTS of common compulsory courses and one compulsory computational course (6 ECTS) to select out of 3.
Compulsory Courses 1st year of the model learning track
These compulsory courses must be successfully completed in the 1st year of the model learning track.
From the courses listed below, students must obtain 46 ECTS credits.
Compulsory Computational Course 1st year of the model learning track
Students must select and successfully complete one of these computational course units in the 1st year of the model learning track.
From the courses listed below, students must obtain 6 ECTS credits.

6ECTS credits - Computational Tissue and Structure Mechanics |
6ECTS credits - Computational Bio-fluid Mechanics |
Compulsory Courses 2nd year of the model learning track
These compulsory courses must be successfully completed in the 2nd year of the model learning track.
From the courses listed below, students must obtain 14 ECTS credits.
3ECTS credits - Clinical Study Design and Biostatistics |
3ECTS credits - Leadership in Health Care |
3ECTS credits - Health Information and Decision Support |
5ECTS credits - Hospital project |
Students must suscribe to at least 30 ECTS of electives from no less than one cluster from the following list and different from the computational course already suscribed to as compulsory course. Subject to approval by the Curriculum Council.
- 8 ECTS in year 1
- 22 ECTS in year 2
Students are allowed to select electives from the different clusters but have to complete at least 18 ECTS of electives from the cluster 'Biomechanics and Biomaterials' (the compulsory computational course is not counted).
To complete this module, students must obtain 30 ECTS credits.
Cluster Biomechanics and Biomaterials
Students who have choosen the profile 'Biomechanics and Biomaterials' must select at least 18 ECTS of courses from this cluster.
'Computational Tissue and Structure Mechanics' and 'Computational Bio-fluid Mechanics' can only be selected as elective if not yet selected as compulsory computational course.
From the courses listed below, students must obtain 18 ECTS credits.
Cluster Radiation Physics
Students aiming at the acquisition of the certificate of ‘Expert in Medical Radiation Physics’ must have successfully completed at least these electives at the end of the master's programme:
- Measurement Techniques in Nuclear Science (3 ECTS)
- Nuclear Physics (3 ECTS)
- Stralingsbescherming en wetgeving (3 ECTS)
- Technology of Radiotherapy (3 ECTS)
- Medical Dosimetry (3 ECTS)
- Radiologic Techniques (3 ECTS)
- Radiochemie (3 ECTS)
- Radiobiology and Radiopathology (3 ECTS)
Cluster Sensors and Medical Devices
.
Cluster Neuro-Engineering
'Computational Neurophysiology' can only be selected as elective if not yet selected as Compulsory computational course.
General Electives
This module includes general electives. Students must respect the specified registration requirements.
The Master Thesis (24 ECTS) is compulsory.
Registration for the Master Thesis is allowed provided that
1. the student doesn't have a combined bachelor-master enrollment
2. the student has already successfully accomplished 45 ECTS of compulsory courses of the master program (exemptions included). "
From the courses listed below, students must obtain 24 ECTS credits.
