Inhoud

This course examines the history and culture of China from a contemporary perspective by adopting an analytical approach. We will study the historical background, the socio-historical context as well as the social changes in contemporary and modern China from around 1911 to the present. Next to this general structure, several prominent themes (e.g. Chinese family and education, Chinese medical sciences) will be discussed as examples to draw a connection between some current cultural products, practices and phenomena and their cultural roots.

Prerequisite: students must first pass Chinese History and Culture I in order to take this course.

Students who complete this course will be able to

develop a general overview of Chinese history. They will be able to describe the key figures, the major events and the most significant developments in various fields in the given historical periods and relate them to the broader social and cultural contexts.
distinguish between and provide an explanation of the main philosophical schools and their tenets.
identify, discuss and summarise the key cultural characteristics of chosen topics; they are able to compare different perspectives and deliver an opinion on the topics.

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Examen Andere bepaalt 20% van het eindcijfer

ZELF Paper bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Mondeling examen met een wegingsfactor 40 en aldus 40% van het totale eindcijfer.

Binnen de categorie Examen Andere dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Praktisch met een wegingsfactor 20 en aldus 20% van het totale eindcijfer.
