This course allows students to get acquainted with multilingual contexts within the Francophonie. After a general introduction on multilingualism and language contact, the theoretical classes will discuss selected sociolinguistic concepts in connection with specific case-studies of multilingualism throughout the Francophonie. The course provides an overview of the social position of French in various countries and regions of Europe and in the world with a particular focus on the social, political, and legal contexts.
As this course is taught in French, an advanced level of French is required.

Students are able to recognise, situate and interpret relevant theories, concepts and terminology in connection to multilingualism in general and the Francophonie in particular, and they can make a connection between their theoretical knowledge and various case studies.
Students have the necessary scientific independence to develop critical and insightful questions and remarks about multilingualism in the Francophone context, and the social position of French in various countries or regions in particular.
Students make correct use of relevant linguistic terminology.
Students take notes during class in order to stimulate their analytic thinking and written skills.
Students are able to clearly and accurately formulate their insights and results in an appropriate register of French.
Students are able to present the results of individual work or independent groupwork in French in a structured manner.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
