Course Content

The course Module Neurology I encompasses the clinical physiotherapeutic examination, the determination of therapy goals and the elaboration and execution of a physiotherapeutic therapy plan in patients with disorders of the peripheral nervous system (lesions of the roots, plexus or nerve, facial paralysis, polyneuropathy, Guilain-Barré disease). Furthermore, based on insight in the biological and psychologcial mechanisms of stress, the application of a few relaxation therapies (progressive relaxation, autogenic training) is teached.

Learning Outcomes

Clinician

The student knows the motor and sensory innervation by the peripheral nerves.

The student knows the mechanism of peripheral nerve degeneration and regeneration.

The student applies the physiotherapeutic principles of the rehabilitation in peripheral nerve lesions in designing and performing the physiotherapeutic assessment.

The student applies the physiotherapeutic principles of the rehabilitation in peripheral nerve lesions in designing and performing the physiotherapeutic treatment plan.

The student knows the physiological and psychological consequences of stress and the stress-reducing measures including relaxation therapies that are applied by the physiotherapist.

The student applies correctly the relaxation methods progressive relaxation (Jacobson) and autogenic training (Schulz) in not complicated clinical cases.

The student knows the natural and abnormal course of disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

The student knows the red flags that necessitate referral to a specialist in case disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

Clinician

The student is able to do a clinical physiotherapeutic examination in a patient with a peripheral nerve lesion. He is able to define appropriate treatment goals and to elaborate a treatment plan. He is able to apply the physiotherapeutic treatment.

The student is able to coach a patient with relaxation therapy using the progressive training by Jacobson or the autogenic training by Schultz.

Clinician

The student is able to adjust the treatment goals and the treatment plan based on the clinical evaluation of the patient.

The student has the psychosocial attitude to initiate a relaxation therapy to the patient and to coach the patient in a relaxation session.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Theorie examen MC with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • PO examen with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Examination: theoretical part: 50 % + practical part: 50 %

In case the score of one of the examination parts is lower than 7/20, there is no calculation of the weighed mean and the lower partial score counts as the total score. A partial score of at least 10/20 will be transferred automatically to the second examination period. However, a student can deny this automatic transferral and has to inform by email the titular before the start of the second examination period. No transfer of partial scores to the next academic year will be done.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
