The course consists of lectures, reading assignments that are collectively discussed, and a workshop with guests speakers. Five lectures will offer introductions on paleoclimatology and four casestudies: 17th-century Europe; Chinese Empire (Ming and Ching period); Western Europe in the High Middle Ages; Roman Imperial Period. Reading assignments on each of the casestudies cover the arguments and methodologies in recent debates on the impact of climate change on society. Reading assignments are discussed in four meetings, one for each casestudy. Reading material will be provided on Canvas.
Students prepare for the discussion of the reading material through assignments. The course is concluded with a workshop with guest speakers presenting their recent research and conclusions regarding the impact of climate change on society. Students prepare for a debate with the guest speakers, either individually or in small groups (depending on the number of participating students). Students will be assigned to one of the speakers before the workshop.

Having completed this course, students can evaluate the palaeoclimatological and historical data and arguments in the debate on the impact of climate on society in the preindustrial world, and they can participate in this debate based on their own arguments.

Evaluation consists of an assignment (20% of final grade) and a written exam (80%). The assignment consists of the discussion with one of the guest speakers (either individually or in small groups), including preparation.
