Course Content

In this course the planning, execution and critical evaluation of qualitative research within psychology is studied. Qualitative research is applied to answer specific research questions, using methods other than those used in quantitative research. The requirements with regard to scientific quality are equally high. The chosen theoretical frameworks and methodologies discussed in this course are an important added value, both for the training of psychologists as for the professional career.
The theoretical part includes fundamental knowledge related to qualitative research in psychology
- Qualitative versus quantitative research
- History and paradigms of the qualitative research approach in psychology
- Ethics within qualitative research
- Characteristics of the qualitative researcher

Learning outcome 
-The student is able to identify the differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods
-The student has insight into the history and paradigms of the qualitative research approach
-The student knows the different qualitative scientific research methods and is aware of its possibilities, limitations and applications
-The student can prepare a qualitative research project and can justify the chosen qualitative research method 
-The student is able to critically reflect on his own assumptions, prejudices and presuppositions
-The student knows the theoretical background of qualitative data analysis techniques and their application.
-The student is able to evaluate whether qualitative research meets the ethical guidelines.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
PRAC Teamwork determines 35% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 5% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Group work with a relative weight of 35 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Practical with a relative weight of 5 which comprises 5% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

If a student has a final grade after the first session of less then 10/20, and
- has obtained a total mark for WPO assignments that is sufficient
(min. 50% of the points to be earned here), then this grade remains valid
for second examination term;
- the grade for WPO assignments was less than 50% of the points to be earned, an individual task must be handed in on the first day of the second examination term (12 am).
If there no new task has been submitted, the grade from the first period remains.

The grade related to the presence during the WPO assignments will be retained.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
