Course Content

There is a special relation between on the one hand popular culture (movies, music, digital culture, …) and on the other hand the identity of young people. Historically, popular culture has been a great influence on our idea of the “adolescent”. It still is. In concrete terms, media have a big impact on how young people shape their own identities. This often leads to adult concerns and panics about media. But young people also shape society through experimentation and the discovery of new (cultural) practices. These new cultural practices enable them to express themselves, make new communities, and so also participate (politically). These interactions will take center stage in this course. In lectures we will discuss some important themes that shed light on the relation between identity and youth culture.
