Inhoud

HOC:

In this course, important concepts and methods in modern organic chemistry are discussed in depth on an advanced level. Next to a thorough description of reaction mechanisms, also modern organic transformations are given with importance in research and industry.

The following topics are covered

1) Radical chemistry and single electron transfer processes

2) Organometallic chemistry and transition metal catalysis

3) Pericyclic reactions: mechanistic aspects and synthetic applications

4) Rearrangements and fragmentations

5) Basic principles of heterocycle synthesis

6) Stereochemical aspects in organic synthesis: diastereoseletive reactions

WPO (26 h):

In theoretical exercises, the application of modern synthetic methods as described in the HOC is introduced in short synthetic sequences and the synthesis of drug molecules. Reactions mechanisms and synthetic challenges are discussed at relevant synthetic targets in detail.

WPO (52 h):

In practical laboratory exercises, students will gain hands on experience in modern synthetic methods. This will include the handling of organometallic reagents, conducting reactions under inert atmosphere and the application of transition metal catalysis in organic synthesis. Furthermore, modern purification (column chromatography) and analytical methods (NMR, IR) will be applied. Students will carry out a short synthetic sequence(s) (3-5 steps) preparing compounds relevant for current research and involving the above mentioned methods. The sequence(s) will be chosen individually and may contain for example cross coupling reactions such as Suzuki- or Negishi reactions, organometalic reactions such as ortho-lithiation or orbital-controlled reactions like Diels Alder reactions. Students will prepare an extensive laboratory report describing the experiments and the analytical data on a level as required for publication in a thesis or a journal article.

Leerresultaten

general competencies

After following this course, the student has advanced knowledge on reactions mechanisms in organic chemistry. The student can communicate in a scientific way on specialized topics in organic chemistry. The student can design organic synthesis sequences including organometalic, catalytic and other modern synthetic methods. Subsequently, the student is able to carry out multiple steps synthesis of organic compounds in the laboratory and document the experiments on a level as required for modern scientific research.
