This course offers a general and systematic overview of the evolution of modern political ideas and ideologies. The course embeds the emergence of political ideas and ideologies in the political, social and economic context in which these ideas and ideologies emerged. To quote Bronowski and Mazlish: “Ideas are not dead thoughts, even when they are no longer contemporary; for they remain steps in the evolution of contemporary ideas. We have wanted to present the ideas of each age not as fossils but as evolving organisms, and not as butterflies in a box but as the vital processes of the human mind. This is a history of the life of ideas: active, mobile, and changing” (1960: xii). The focus of the course is the idea of emancipation and more specifically the tensions, contradictions and parallels in changing views on equality and liberty and how these ideas evolved, over time, in relation to the Other, i.e. the non-Western world. This course thus aims to familiarize students with the relations between political thought, historical context and concrete political movements striving for emancipation. Therefore the course offers a framework for analyzing political ideas, ideologies and action in the present day world.

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the following competences and skills:
LO1: They have an active knowledge of the key concepts and theories in theories of (political) ideas and ideologies. They are able to use and discuss these concepts and theories, and apply them to real life events.
LO2: They are familiar with the historical roots of ideologies.
LO3: They understand the functioning of ideologies, their historical evolution and different forms. They are also familiar with the broader historical context in which these ideologies and political ideas have developed.
LO4: They can interpret and analyze current political issues and discussions using the specific concepts and ideas and of the history of ideologies.
