Course Content

Within this course, the student should make a report of his / her own research in the form of a publishable article. It is intended that the article will be submitted for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal with the student as first author, before the oral defence of the work takes place.

The student has insight in the progression from a study protocol on a specific topic of Ageing to an original research article that is eligible for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal.

SKILLS

The student is able to:

  • recruit participants and collect data according to a study protocol that is approved by the institution’s ethical committee
  • generate a database that is in line with the GDPR regulations and that is suitable for statistical analysis
  • apply appropriate statistical methods to analyze the collected data
  • report the study results by means of an original research article that is eligible for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal
  • present his/her study results by means of a power-point presentation and defend these results in front of a jury

The student shows an attitude in compliance with the deontological principles of scientific research and the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Andere with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

English:

Before the submission deadline defined by the Faculty examination regulations the student submits the research article through the dedicated interface for this course on the online learning platform of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel together with the official confirmation of submission to an international peer-reviewed journal. The research article is formatted according to the guidelines of the international peer-reviewed journal to which it is submitted and is accompanied by the original submission letter.

This research paper is evaluated by a jury consisting in the student’s promoter and 2 expert reviewers; the course responsible acts as chair of the jury. During the exams period of the second semester the student presents his/her research article by means of a presentation of maximum 10 minutes, which is followed by an oral defense during which the student is questioned by the jury. The presentation and the defense are evaluated by the jury. The final score is computed as follows:

Research article:

  • promoter: 20% of the total score
  • reviewer 1: 20% of the total score
  • reviewer 2: 20% of the total score

Oral presentation: 20% of the total score

Oral defense: 20% of the total score

In exceptional circumstances a student can submit a motivated request to the head of the programm in order to be allowed to take an online exam.

De student dient een onderzoeksartikel in vóór de indiendatum vastgelegd door het facultaire onderwijs- en examenreglement, via het online leerplatform, samen met de officiële bevestiging van inzending naar een internationaal peer-reviewed tijdschrift. Het onderzoeksartikel is opgesteld volgens de richtlijnen van het internationale peer-reviewed tijdschrift waar het ingediend werd en is vergezeld van de originele indieningsbrief.

Dit onderzoeksartikel wordt beoordeeld door een jury die bestaat ui de promotor van de student en 2 expert beoordelaars. De titularis van dit opleidingsonderdeel is de voorzitter van de jury. Tijdens de examenperiode van het tweede semester presenteert de student dit onderzoeksartikel via een presentatie van maximum 10 minuten. Deze wordt gevolgd door een mondelinge verdediging waarbij de student ondervraagd wordt door de jury. Zowel de presentatie als de verdediging worden beoordeeld door de jury. 

Het eindcijfer wordt als volgt berekend:

Onderzoeksartikel:

  • promotor: 20% van het eindcijfer
  • beoordelaar 1: 20% van het eindcijfer
  • beoordelaar 2: 20% van het eindcijfer

Mondelinge presentatie: 20% van het eindcijfer

Mondelinge verdediging: 20% van het eindcijfer

In uitzonderlijke omstandigheden kan een student een gemotiveerd verzoek indienen bij de voorzitter van de opleidingsraad om online examen te mogen doen.
