Course Content

Under the guidance of the promoter (content) and the teaching staff (form), the student finishes the application for doctoral scholarship and submits it in accordance with the appropriate procedures of the scientific fund. The end product is assessed by the promoter (content), the instructor-in-charge (form) as well as by means of an oral defence.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching methods include workshops leaded by the teaching staff. The student will mainly work on his/her research application under close guidance & supervision of his/her promoter(s).

The student knows

  • the channels and related regulations where he/she can submit an application for a doctoral scholarship
  • the requirements and regulations for starting and completing a PhD-project in Gerontological Sciences

INSIGHT

The student has insight in the progression from a research idea on a specific topic of Ageing to an application for a doctoral scholarship that is eligible for financial funding.

SKILLS

The student is able to write an application for a doctoral scholarship on a specific topic of Ageing and to submit it to a scientific funding agency. The student is thereby able to:

  • formulate an appropriate research question on a specific topic of Ageing
  • identify a suitable research design based on a research question on a specific topic of Ageing
  • design the different components of a research proposal
  • write a suitable personal statement
  • complete all required documents that accompany the submission of an application for a doctoral scholarship
  • present his/her application for a doctoral scholarship by means of a power-point presentation at the level of an (international) expert jury

 

ATTITUDES

The student shows an attitude in compliance with the deontological principles of scientific research and the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Andere with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

English:

On the first day of the exams period  the student submits the research application and all other related documents through the dedicated interface for this course on the online learning platform of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, together with the confirmation of submission to a scientific funding agency. The research application is formatted according to the guidelines of the targeted funding agency.

This research application is evaluated by the student’s promoter (25% of the total score) and the teaching staff (50% of the total score). During the exams period of the first semester the student presents his/her research application by means of a presentation (in line with the guidelines of the targeted funding agency) and defend his/her application for the teaching staff (acting at the level of an international expert jury, when necessary external experts can be invited); this oral defense is evaluated by the teaching staff (25% of the total score).

In exceptional circumstances a student can submit a motivated request to the head of the programm in order to be allowed to take an online exam.

Op de eerste dag van de examenperiode dient de student de onderzoeksaanvraag en alle gerelateerde documenten in via het online leerplatform, samen met de bevestiging van inzending naar een wetenschappelijk financieringsorgaan.

Deze onderzoeksaanvraag wordt beoordeeld door de promotor van de student (25% van het eindcijfer) en het docententeam (50% van het eindcijfer). De student presenteert de onderzoeksaanvraag tijdens de examenperiode van het eerste semester door middel van een presentatie (afgestemd op de richtlijnen van het gekozen financieringsorgaan) en verdedigt de aanvraag voor het docententeam (dat de rol van jury opneemt op het niveau van een internationale expertenjury; indien nodig kunnen externe experten uitgenodigd worden). Deze mondelinge verdediging wordt beoordeeld door het docententeam (25% van het eindcijfer).

In uitzonderlijke omstandigheden kan een student een gemotiveerd verzoek indienen bij de voorzitter van de opleidingsraad om online examen te mogen doen.
