Course Content

In this course, the student will draft a publishable systematic literature review, jointly under the methodological guidance of the teaching staff as well as under substantive supervision of the promoter. It is intended that the final product is submitted for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal with the student as first author. This course allows students to study in more depth a specific part of Healthy Ageing.

 

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching methods include workshops leaded by the teaching staff. The student will mainly work on his/her manuscript under close guidance & supervision of his/her promoter(s).

KNOWLEDGE

The student knows the international methodological standards of a publishable systematic review. These include levels of evidence and all relevant aspects of the PRISMA guidelines.

INSIGHT

The student has insight in how literature data provide scientific evidence on a specific topic of Ageing.

SKILLS

The student is able to write a publishable systematic literature review in correct academic English. The student is thereby able to:

  • formulate an appropriate research question a systematic literature review
  • design an appropriate search key
  • run a systematic literature search in relevant scientific databases
  • recognize and select the appropriate study designs for answering a literature research question
  • extract and appraise relevant data from scientific literature
  • compute a meta-analysis where appropriate
  • appraise literature according to relevant methodological checklists
  • appraise the scientific evidence of relevant data extracted from scientific literature
  • interpret the results and discuss them in a scientifically sound manner
  • critically reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of his/her literature study

ATTITUDES

The student shows a critical attitude regarding literature published in the field of Gerontology as well as regarding his/her own manuscript.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Andere with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

English:

On the first day of the exams period the student submits the final version of the systematic literature review through the dedicated interface for this course on the online learning platform of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel together with the official confirmation that the manuscript was also submitted for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal. The manuscript is formatted according to the guidelines of the international peer-reviewed journal to which it has been submitted and is accompanied by the original submission letter.

This manuscript is evaluated by the student’s promoter (25% of the total score) and the teaching staff (75% of the total score).

Op de eerste dag van de examenperiode dient de student de finale versie van de systematische literatuurstudie in via het online leerplatform, samen met de officiële bevestiging dat het manuscript ook werd ingezonden voor publicatie in een international peer-reviewed tijdschrift. Het manuscript wordt opgesteld op basis van de richtlijnen van het international peer-reviewed tijdschrift waarvoor het werd ingediend en is vergezeld van de originele inzendingsbrief.

Dit manuscript wordt beoordeeld door de promotor van de student (25% van het eindcijfer) en het docententeam (75% van het eindcijfer).
