Course Content

In this course, the competences for the due execution of a systematic literature review including meta-analysis are learned. Within this course, the students are also accompanied in the identification of a topic on which substantive work will continue under the supervision of a promoter through the master curriculum.

 

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching methods include lectures and workshops leaded by the teaching staff. The student will work on his/her manuscript under close guidance & supervision of his/her promoter(s).

KNOWLEDGE

The student knows the methodological standards to perform a systematic review. These include proper methods to formulate a research question, to design a search key, to extract relevant data and to compute a meta-analysis.

INSIGHT

The student has insight in which published study designs are appropriate for answering literature research questions on a specific topic of Ageing.

SKILLS

The student is able to

  • formulate an appropriate research question a systematic literature review
  • design an appropriate search key
  • run a systematic literature search in relevant scientific databases
  • recognize and select the appropriate study designs for answering a literature research question
  • extract and appraise relevant data from scientific literature
  • appraise literature according to relevant methodological checklists

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

PROSPERO protocol of the systematic review = 50% of the total score
On the first day of the exams period the student submits a PROSPERO protocol of the systematic literature review through the dedicated interface for this course on the online learning platform of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. This version is formatted and includes all items according to the PROSPERO guidelines (see https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/). The protocol must NOT yet be officially registered.

This manuscript is evaluated by the student’s promoter (=30% of the total score) and by the teaching staff (=20% of the total score)

First version of the systematic literature review = 20% of the total score

Written exam = 30% of the total score
A written exam with questions related to the methodological standards to perform a systematic review. The written exam is evaluated by the teaching staff.

In exceptional circumstances a student can submit a motivated request to the head of the programm in order to be allowed to take an online exam.

Een schriftelijk examen met vragen over de methodologische standaarden die nodig zijn om een systematische literatuurstudie uit te voeren. Dit examen wordt beoordeeld door het docententeam.

In uitzonderlijke omstandigheden kan een student een gemotiveerd verzoek indienen bij de voorzitter van de opleidingsraad om online examen te mogen doen.
