Course Content

The course starts with a review of the differing perspectives on the

ageing process and the key features of ageing within the social

sciences, and we make an overview with concern to recent theory

development and research.

We consider the impact of demographic and social change during the

twentieth century on how we define an ageing population.

Once the general (meta) theoretical framework has been acquired, a

number of applications are discussed which are specific in terms of the

target groups they pertain to, such as images of ageing, gender and

ethnicity in the social structuring of later life, housing and living

arrangements of elderly people, volunteering, age-friendly environments,

working situation, sexuality, life-long learning.....

On these topics the students have to summarise and discuss* some of the articles and papers.
