Course Content

Diplomacy serves the function of allowing for the peaceful cohabitation between a specific political community and the wider world. This course aims to provide master students with a conceptual introduction to discussions about modern diplomacy as it unfolds in practice, and to prepare them for a variety of related career paths. It will feature a number of lectures on key concepts and topical issues, as well as sessions focused on practical diplomatic skills, such as negotiation techniques and drafting policy notes.

A reader of selected articles and papers will be made available via the online learning platform Canvas, together with an accompanying course syllabus. Students are also expected to keep up with current news on international affairs.

By the end of this course, the students will be able to

  • Recognise and understand the general dynamics of the contemporary diplomatic system
  • Analyse international affairs independently and critically
  • Understand the principal functions of diplomats in the 21st century
  • Draft policy notes

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral Exam with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Assignment with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Students are evaluated on the basis of a written assignment (accounting for 25% of the overall grade) and an oral exam (accounting for 75% of the overall grade).
