During this course, we focus on cancer, its treatment and the adverse events in patients living with and beyond cancer, including in the oncologic palliative phase. The main part concerns rehabilitation of oncologic disorders, discussing screening and assessments, evidence based and best practice guidelines and exercise-oncology (effectivity, how to build a treatment plan, ...).
Communication with the students goes through the digital platform of the interuniversity organisation (VICE).
Clinical cases are discussed during the HOC, as well as in an obligatory group assignment.
1.The student has advanced knowledge and insight in the pathophysiological and biochemical mechanisms of cancer, in the epidemiology of cancer in Belgium and the Western World and in the differente diagnositic and treatment modalities of the most common cancers in adults. The student has the appropriate professional attitude to communicate on this with the patient and with colleagues of the multidisciplinary team, taking into account social and multicultural differences.
2.The student has advanced knowledge and insight in the short, long and late term effects of (the treatment of) cancer. The student is able to do a structured anamnesis to find out bio-psycho-social complications by relevant questioning, he/she is able to rate and interpret physical complications by performing a clinical exam (inspection, palpation, relevant testing) and he/she can construct an appropriate treatment plan for the bio-psycho-social complications or can refer the patient directly to a colleague of the multidisciplinary team, based on yellow/red flags after screening.
3. The student can construct a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program, can evaluate it, can modify and coordinate it for a cancer patient before, during and after treatment. The student can function as a mental and physical coach for cancer patients before, during and after treatment, as well a in the palliative setting. For cancer related fatigue, sarcopenia, distress, and lymphedema, the student is able to construct a physical rehabilitation program, based on relevant measurements, that meets the international up to date scientific evidence, like f.e. the guidelines of the International Society of Lymphology, to become te best evidence based practice and the student is able to conduct this treatment plan. The student knows the administrative regulations that concern these rehabilitation programs in our country, like for example reimbursement, and is able to settle this for the patient.

For the group assignment, students must register in time and correctly according to the guidelines (communicated through the platform). If a student fails to do so, they can no longer participate in the assignment and this is considered an illegal absence. Late, substantiated assignment submissions will be assigned an adjustment factor of 0.5 to 0.7 (depending on the severity of the delay according to the deadline).
With all WPO, attendance is obligatory. If you are illegally absent, you cannot participate in the examination neither in the first term, nor in the second and you will be appointed 0/20 as a result code in both terms.
A partial result of a part (exam or assignment) will be transposed to the second term, with a result of at least 10/20 automatically. A student cannot choose not to have this result transposed. A partial result of the exam, cannot be transposed to the second academic year.
In case of insufficiencies for certain parts, a score lower than 8/20, there will be no calculated mean, but the lowest partial score will count as the final result.
