Course Content

The course " français des affaires " concerns an annual course and is spread over two semesters. The course is practical and is conceived as a “werkcollege”. Therefore, attendance and active participation during the classes is mandatory (see additional information regarding the evaluation). To the extent possible, we take into account the student's starting level and operate a differentiation model so that each student can make progress in foreign language acquisition. However, a good basic knowledge of French (B1/B2 level) is both an advantage and an added value. Students whose starting level is below B1 are encouraged and requested to catch up on an independent basis.

The general pedagogy used stems from the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method. Through CLIL, students are exposed to non-language-oriented content with the goal of promoting multilingualism in an interactive manner. The content provided leans towards the general education economics and commercial engineering course and deepens various economic topics that are systematically adapted according to current events.

Students "train" speaking, listening, writing and reading skills through a wide range of working methods, and this via contact teaching on campus as well as with the help of a digital exercise platform (Projet Voltaire) and the possibility to "boost" oral language skills via the Tandem project in cooperation with ULB. In general, argumentation techniques, reading and listening skills on complex topics, presentation skills, interpretation skills, critical thinking, analytical and synthetic thinking are covered in depth.

All concrete information about the content and themes of the course will be communicated in the first lecture by means of a vade mecum. This document is binding and contains the modalities regarding the evaluation criteria, the interrelationship of the sub-items, the organization and the ‘course’ of the course.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • examen with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students are evaluated throughout the semester through ongoing assessment, punctual tests, exercises and assignments and a final oral exercise. The evaluation criteria are grouped into three modules:

1) Speaking skills : includes presentations (in group);

2) Writing skills : includes a vocabulary test and a writing assignment (with plagiarism detection);

3) Continuous assessment : includes digital exercises on grammar, spelling and vocabulary as well as attendance and active participation in classes.

To pass this course and obtain a final score, the three modules must be validated and several conditions must be met:

1) The student must participate in all evaluation items inside the three modules à in case of non-participation in any of the items, the student will be referred to second session to retake for the respective module(s);

2) The student must pass all modules by achieving an average of 50% for each module à in case of an average score for any module below 50%, the student will be referred to second session to resit for the relevant module(s);

3) The student may not obtain any failing grade lower than 8/20 on the individual components within the modules à in case of a score lower than 8/20 on any of the components, the module will be considered unsuccessful and the student will be referred to second session to resit for the module(s) in question.

Details of the second session will be communicated in due course and through an additional document on Canvas. Partial marks obtained for the module(s) and components passed in first session are transferred to second session, unless otherwise stated in the vademecum. No partial points are transferred to a subsequent academic year. Students who wish to participate in the second session must notify their respective instructor by e-mail no later than 1 week after the official announcement of marks through the faculty. Late notifications will no longer be considered.

Attendance and active participation in classes is mandatory (cfr. Module 3). To substantiate his/her absence during class or during an evaluation moment (test, assignment, presentation), the student must:

1) report to his/her respective teacher before the start of the lesson/evaluation moment;

2) send a valid proof of force majeure (medical certificate) within three days.

Only when these conditions are met can the student be invited to a catch-up moment regarding the evaluation moments.

The exact details of the evaluation criteria and the inter-weighting of the partial marks will be communicated during the first lecture by means of a vade mecum. The vade mecum contains all the concrete information about the evaluation criteria, the organization and the course and is a binding document.
