Course unit 'housing' aims to make students acquainted with the relevant spatial dimensions of housing such as:
- the functioning of housing markets (public housing systems, regional housing market, macro-economic dimensions of housing and fiscal aspects)
- residential real estate development
- housing policy
- history, theory and current problems of public and social housing
- land policy
- housing quality
- new housing initiatives, housing activism, inclusive dwelling environments, housing commons
The course consists of a series of lectures, guest lectures, readings and fieldwork.
The following learning outcomes are expected:
- Knowing and understanding
1) basic concepts of residential and real estate production;
2) the main historical and contemporary housing policy measures in Belgium, and
3) new innovative spatial typologies and tenure systems;
- Historically and theoretically situating the state and market-driven housing tendencies in Belgium (Brussels-Capital Region, Flanders) and framing this in a wider western perspective;
- Critically analyzing and presenting relevant practices and views in housing.
