Course Content

Medialab is aimed at acquiring a series of media specific skills as part of the development of communication sciences students into reflexive media professions. Medialab brings together education and professional practice, by putting emphasis on tacit skills that are required in the professional field, and media specific skills applicable in various media domains from journalism to marketing, culture and media production.

Medialab consists of four thematic dimensions: conceptualising, producing, presenting and planning. Within each dimension, every year one specific module should be followed (in total 3 modules per semester). The modules consist of a combination of workshops/seminars, group tasks and coaching. Examples of specific skills here are media training, pitching, brainstorming, podcast, social media marketing, digital storytelling. Medialab sets out from a collaboration with media partners and expert in the field. Aside from gaining knowledge in these skills, Medialab aims to inspire students to start being creative and engage in these skills themselves.

General Competences

Medialab is aimed at acquiring a series of media specific skills as part of the development of communication sciences students into reflexive media professions. Medialab brings together education and professional practice, by putting emphasis on tacit skills that are required in the professional field, and media specific skills applicable in various media domains from journalism to marketing, culture and media production.

The specific objectives of Medialab I are:

  • Students participate in activities related to specific professional and media specific skills relevant in the broad media and communications industries within a flexible environment that simulates the work field;
  • Students learn specific skills crucial for the further curriculum and development of students as communication sciences professionals: the basics of video storytelling, developing editorial content for marketing purposes; developing a social media plan;
  • Students develop a detailed planning for the organization of an event/communication campaign;
  • Students are inspired to engage themselves in the field of media and communication;
  • Students learn the basis to critically reflect on the acquired skills during Medialab and their curriculum.

 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Practical Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Peer Evaluation Group Assign with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.
  • Reflection Report with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.
  • Preparartory Assignments with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Medialab is part of every bachelor year in the program. Students work in group in assignments where the acquired skills need to be applied.
Aside from these assignments, there is no exam or required work at home.

The scoring consists of an evaluation of the process and development of each student, rather than the finalized version of the assignments.

Students are evaluated on:

  • Attendance at lectures, workshops and assignments (attendance is compulsory, unless explicitly mentioned otherwise);
  • Peer evaluation by fellow students;
  • A self-assessment and evaluation of the Medialab assignments.
  • Small preparatory assignments

Not attending workshops, guest lectures and assignments results in a lower score for the overall Medialab. Medialab activities are grouped within a specific Medialab day every week during 8 to 10 weeks. Aside from these specific days, other additional contact hours could be planned (for extra info, feedback, etc.). Attendance at all these activities is required, not attending will result in -2 to -4 of the total score per activity.

If less than half of the workshops can be followed due to legitimated absence, an alternative extra individual assignment will be given as part of this course.

There is no exam and no possibility for passing in second term. Students that do not pass the Medialab, need to retake it the next year.
