Inhoud

This course is designed to help students develop their English communication skills with a specific focus on the field of communication studies. It builds on the English language skills already acquired by the students and allows them to expand their knowledge of English for communication studies. The course immerses students in the language, and aims on the one hand to equip them with both the language and skills necessary to function in professional contexts relevant to their field of studies, and on the other hand to provide maximal opportunity for the students to apply these in tasks. Therefore, the style of the course is interactive in order to create as many opportunities as possible for students to practice their speaking skills. Students will get the chance to participate in discussions and work on presentation skills, in doing so developing their critical reading and argumentation skills. Topics for both these discussions and the presentations are related to the field of communication science (e.g. the Anglophone media landscape, advertising, echo-chambers, censorship, etc.) and are updated on a regular basis. The course is structured in such a way as to build towards increasing autonomy on the part of the students as language-users.

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie
  • In the first exam session, assessment is on the basis of:
  • an oral exam (50%) and
  • in-class assessment components (50%).
  • (More specific details will be shared with the students at the start of the semester (in class and/or via Canvas)).

  • Students who do not complete the oral exam are unable to pass the course in the first exam session.
  • Students who do not participate in at least one of the in-class assessment components are unable to pass the course in the first exam session.
  • Students who do not complete the presentation will receive a score of 0 for this assessment component but are still eligible to be assessed for the course in the first exam session providing they have completed the other in-class assessment tasks.
  • Students who do not complete all of the in-class assessment tasks will receive a score of 0 for said assessment component but are still eligible to be assessed for the course in the first exam session providing they have completed the presentation.
  • In the second exam session, assessment is on the basis of an oral exam (50%) and an individual presentation (50%).
  • Students who do not pass the course in the first exam session and who wish to be examined in the second exam session are required to take the oral exam if they achieved a fail grade for the oral exam in the first exam session. Students who in the first exam session passed the oral exam but who failed the course overall may choose to carry over their score from the oral exam to the second exam session.
  • Students who do not pass the course in the first exam session and who wish to be examined in the second exam session are required to give an individual presentation if in the first exam session they achieved an overall fail grade for the combined in-class assessment components. Students who in the first exam session achieved an overall pass grade for the combined in-class assessment components but who failed the course overall may choose to carry over their combined score from the in-class assessment components instead of giving an individual presentation in the second exam session.
  • In both the first and the second exam session, an overall final grade of 10/20 or above is sufficient to pass the course even if a pass grade has not been achieved for each individual assessment component.
  • No scores for individual assessment components or exams may be carried over to a subsequent academic year.
