3 ECTS credits
78 u studietijd
Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 4021494DNR voor alle studenten in het 2e semester met een inleidend master niveau.
The course looks at how proteins, starting from their unique sequences, fold into 3D structures that are build to perform dedicated biological functions:
Students will gain an advanced insight into structural buildup of proteins and the ways in which this directs protein function and how genetic disorders can result in protein malfunction and disease. In addition, students will get introduced to methods to study protein structure and learn how to retrieve and handle structural information from protein structure databases.
Students need to have had the equivalent of the course Biochemistry.
Students will understand the molecular and structural principles that determine protein function and malfunction in: enzymatic catalysis, molecular recognition, transport, signal transduction, molecular motors, and structural scaffolding.
Students will be able to understand and analyse protein structures from standard representations used in scientific literature. They will able to analyse functional implications of protein structural information and critically assess scientific literature reporting such information.
