Inhoud

In this course we investigate inequalities in the educational context and how this differs for specific groups (such as ethnicity, LGBT, students from disadvantaged families and with a disability). By discussing several authors, theoretical frameworks and concepts, we get insight into the mechanisms on a macro, meso and microlevel that contribute to these inequalities. We critically analyse several avenues that might remedy these inequalities.

Algemene competenties

At the end of this course, students:

Have knowledge of the existing educational inequality for certain societal groups
Can identify mechanisms creating these different educational conditions
Can critically analyze the difficulties an individual from a specific background may face given the characteristics of the educational context
Are able to apply in a critical and reasoned way the theoretical frameworks and concepts discussed in class to a real life situation or case
Can identify and discuss (dis)advantages of several possibilities for inclusion in the educational context
Can work independently and in group on a literature and practice-research on a current diversity-topic. Students can report on this research in both oral and written format.

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Schriftelijk bepaalt 65% van het eindcijfer

HOC Groepswerk bepaalt 35% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Written exam met een wegingsfactor 65 en aldus 65% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Multiple choice and open questions

Binnen de categorie HOC Groepswerk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Group assignment met een wegingsfactor 35 en aldus 35% van het totale eindcijfer.

The written exam consists of multiple choice questions (with standard setting) and one or more open questions. The distribution of points and the size of the correction for guessing will be communicated before the start of the exam and on the exam sheet. The students are expected to thoroughly process the compulsory study material and explicitly refer to it in the open questions of their written exam.

Participation in both parts (group assignment and exam) are required to pass the course. Absence from a mandatory part of the evaluation leads to an absence as resultcode.

A re-examination (in August or September) is possible for the written exam.
A re-examination of the group assignment is not possible. The partial result for this assignment will be transferred to the second examination period.
