Business students need to understand that they will use and be confronted with business law throughout their careers, even if their business never gets caught up in a legal dispute. Hence, it is important that business students gain a basic understanding of the legal environment in which businesses operate. They need to be able to assess and anticipate possible legal risks involved in any business decision-making process.
To provide students with such a basic understanding, this introductory course starts with a general introduction to the law. Students will get acquainted with the basic concepts and legal structures that are indispensable for a good understanding of legal reasoning and the importance of (business) law. In a second part, the course will focus on the law of the European Union. After a brief historic and institutional overview of the European Union, students will learn about the influence of European Union law on businesses operating within Europe. Finally, the students will be immersed in business organisation law, with a specific emphasis on the various organisational structures available to businesses and the company, in particular.
The course material includes lectures (guest lectures included), reading assignments, and other material posted on the electronic learning platform throughout the semester.

The written exam is a “closed book” exam, comprising a combination of multiple-choice, short answer and discussion questions. Examples of questions will be provided during the lectures and will be available via the electronic learning platform.
