170 u studietijd
Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 1021098BER voor alle studenten in het 2e semester met een verdiepend bachelor niveau.
The course aims to deepen the student’s insights into the social and political dimensions of contemporary economic processes. More specifically, it offers a systematic analysis of two interlinked transversal developments: the rise in inequality and increasing financial instability (culminating into the global financial crisis of 2008). The course aims to develop a thorough understanding of the sources and consequences of these developments from a political economy perspective. After giving a historic overview of the international economic system and the main schools of thought in political economy, various policy domains will be examined, including: socioeconomic policy (social security, labour market organisation and the welfare state); macroeconomic policy (shifts in paradigms in monetary and fiscal policymaking); tax policy (the problem of international tax competition and the battle against tax evasion and avoidance); corporate governance (regulation of firms and multinational organizations); financial policy (the management of financial crises and the regulation of the financial sector).
