Course Content

This course offers an overview of the sociological changes the European societies have witnessed since the Second World War until now. We focus on the following social changes and their corresponding opportunities and challenges:

  • Poverty, social inequalities and European welfare states
  • Migration, ethnic inequalities and discrimination
  • Gender inequalities, sexuality and emancipation
  • Urbanization and European cities

The course consists of interactive lectures with classroom discussions. Classroom discussions allow the lecturer to grasp at intermittent moments the extent of the students' collective understanding of the course content. The insights provided by these interactive sessions allow for a remediation or an additional in-depth treatment of topics that do not seem to be fully understood. To this end, students are expected to prepare for class (i.e. read the weekly assigned materials) and to participate actively in classroom discussions.

Additional info

The course material consists of slides (power point presentations) and scientific articles. Slides and accompanying articles will be made available on Canvas, the online study platform.
