This module is designed to teach and improve your academic writing skills. As such, it focuses mainly on the following components: (1) general organization and cohesion of academic discourse; (2) dealing with academic sources in the running text and in the list of references; (3) the academic register: issues of vocabulary and style; (4) the writing of a clear and cohesive academic abstract.
The interactive seminars aim to provide you with relevant practical skills and knowledge by way of examples and in-class assignments. You will then practise those skills further through take-home assignments.
The powerpoint presentations used in class may be supplemented with additional reading materials and assignments. All materials will be made available on the e-learning platform.
Upon successful completion of the course, students
(1) are familiar with the formal and stylistic conventions of English academic texts and can apply these in (their own) writing;
(2) can draw up a consistent list of references and adequately cite sources in the running text;
(3) can adequately summarize and paraphrase academic discourse;
(4) can produce a cohesive and coherent abstract in accordance with the conventions of the academic genre.
Students can report on their own research (e.g. in a Bachelor’s thesis or Master’s thesis) in English that adheres to the conventions of the academic genre

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
