Course Content

Terminology is generally regarded as the specialised vocabulary within a discipline or specialised field (such as medicine, biology, economics or law). This course consists of three learning modules.

The first module offers an introduction to several key concepts in the field of Terminology, such as 'terms' and 'units of understanding'. Common views about terminology are discussed on the basis of several theoretical approaches. In addition to the traditional, prescriptive view of terminology, we also zoom in on social, cultural, (socio-)cognitive or textual, theoretical views.

In the second module, several topics related to terminology (and specialised language) will be further highlighted, more specifically neologisms, terminological variation, metaphorical language use and phraseology in specialised communicative situations. It will focus on a) scientific insights related to these topics and b) what the implications of these insights are for language professionals (e.g. terminologists, interpreters and translators).

The third module explores the practice of (e-)terminography in which the language professional uses electronic tools to identify, describe and manage terms in texts with a view to creating monolingual or multilingual terminological 'end products'. It looks at the different steps in the terminographic workflow and possible digital tools that support these steps (such as term extraction and terminology management systems).The module will be completed with a small-scale terminology project in which the acquired knowledge is put into practice.

In the course of the class weeks, students are given assignments that prepare them for their SELF paper and on which they receive feedback.

The student:
- can reflect on the importance of terminology (management) in different application areas;
- can explain key concepts in the domain of Terminology (e.g. 'term', 'terminological variation', 'neologisms', etc.) by drawing several links, on the one hand with scientific insights related to these concepts and on the other hand with the practices of language professionals (e.g. terminologists, interpreters and translators);
- has acquired knowledge of theoretical insights in the field of Terminology and understands what these insights mean for terminographical working methods;
- has acquired knowledge of the different steps in a terminographical workflow and is able to carry out a (small-scale) terminological project.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Paper determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • report terminologyproject with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student carries out a small-scale terminology project and presents this project as a paper. In this paper, the student should also link the project to the different topics that have been addressed in the course.

The paper may also be submitted as a group work, whereby the group may consist of two, maximum three, students.
